(02/01/26) Most of us never get to lock eyes with the bedrock underneath our cities. Although if you concentrate hard enough, you can hear the compressed terrain sequestered beneath your feet. Like tightly stacked nebulas slowly lithifying, the sound calls to mind the clangor of ambulating ions entering and exiting the chamber of a plenum.

(01/12/1960) A century after the death of Jérôme Bonaparte, my grandfather published a review article on how plasmas diffuse and transport across magnetic fields, serving as a theoretical foundation for understanding magnetized plasma behavior in experiments on supersonic flow, rendered discernible through schlieren photographs. These images opened new possibilities for diagnosing and controlling high-octane conditions relevant to fusion energy and hypersonic flight, and offered a laboratory-scale analogue to the magnetized plasma dynamics observed in phenomena such as solar storms. Schlieren imaging requires an elaborate optical apparatus—a precisely aligned light source, concave mirrors, and a knife-edge occluder—all calibrated by human hands before the image is made: a human intervention that disappears into the instrument. The resulting image is authorless, yet authoritative. A lawlike, ultra-acheiropoieton, as if physics itself signed it, entirely displacing authenticity from bodies. What is authentic within a schlieren photograph is not the object: the image no longer testifies to a discrete body in the world, but to the presence of difference within a medium, a disclosure of structure.
